Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

                                         EMDR ...
...stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a technique that is widely used in the treatment of trauma, chronic pain, cravings, phobias and many other symptoms.  The premise of this technique is that through the use of 'bi-lateral movement' and with the assistance of a skilled therapist, we are able to access and quickly process 'old' material (thoughts, feelings, beliefs) that cause us to be 'stuck' in a particular behavior pattern.  It is important to find a therapist who is trained and skilled in providing this service.

                            Trauma ...

...can be a single event, like an accident or it can be chronic childhood or adult abuse.  It is defined as 'an extremely distressing experience that causes severe emotional shock and may have long lasting psychological effects'.  Symptoms that result from trauma may include

  • distressing dreams
  • flashbacks
  • feeling detached from loved ones
  • reduced ability to feel emotions
  • irritability
  • difficulty completing tasks

These are very normal yet incredibly disruptive reactions to a 'distressing experience'.  It is important to know that there are very effective, research-based methods of treating these symptoms.  You can read more about trauma by visiting

                          Addictions ...
...can occur in many forms.  We generally think of alcohol or drugs when thinking of addictions but there are many behaviors that can fit into this category.  Gambling, internet use, work and exercise are just a few examples.  Sometimes, addictive behavior is related to a traumatic event.  It becomes a way of managing some of those disturbing and disruptive symptoms mentioned above.

How do you know if you or someone you love has an addiction?  Some of the questions you can ask are...

  • Do you have problems with finances, relationships or work due to use of alcohol/drugs?
  • Have you felt remorse after using?
  • Do you drink/use to escape from worries or to decrease shyness?
  • Have you ever experienced a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking?
  •  These are all red flags that there is a serious problem that needs to be treated.  Treatment can consist of individual therapy, family therapy and/or 12-step groups.  In some cases, intensive outpatient (IOP) or hospitalization is necessary.  Call me at 303-756-9052, ext. 165 or visit http://www.nida.nih.gov/ to learn more about addiction.  You can also visit the following websites for information on intensive outpatient programs or hospitalization:
