ACOA ~ Adult Children of Alcoholics
This is a set of characteristics that are frequently seen in individuals who have grown up in a family that has addictions or other dysfunction. Some of the traits that are common in this population include:
- problems with intimacy
- a need for perfection
- harsh self criticism
- fear of conflict
- over-developed sense of responsibility
These traits have evolved over time as a way to manage an unmanageable situation that you experienced as a child. What worked in childhood is no longer effective in adulthood. Now, it merely causes pain and problems in relationships. There are ways to learn to manage your feelings and behaviors in healthy ways while keeping the essence of your personality. The first step is talking to someone who is familiar with this issue.
Keep in mind that having these problems may be related to the unhealthy dynamics of living in an alcoholic family. It can also be indicative of several other problems. Please call me at 303-867-4619 to discuss your specific situation.
