DBT ~ Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
DBT Groups begin every 6 weeks. Next group ~ Distress Tolerance~ starts August 29th. Contact me for more details or to schedule an intake.
DBT was developed by Marsha Linehan as a way to treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is commonly known to cause, among other things, problems with emotional regulation and difficulty with interpersonal relationships. Her premise was that the most effective way to treat individuals with this diagnosis was with a combination of cognitive behavioral techniques and mindfulness practice.
Since its inception, DBT has proven to be very effective in treating problems in many other areas including anxiety and phobias, bipolar disorder, addictions, extreme anger and other intensely emotional experiences. DBT uses a skills training approach to managing intensely emotional experiences.
Groups meet weekly for a total of 18 weeks. There are three 6-week modules ~ interpersonal effectiveness, emotional regulation and distress tolerance. Each of the modules will incorporate the core skill ~ mindfulness ~ into the lesson.
