EMDR is a technique that has been widely used in the treatment of trauma, chronic pain, cravings, phobias and many other symptoms.  The premise of this technique is that, through the use of 'bi-lateral movement' and with the assistance of a skilled therapist, we are able to access and quickly process 'old' material (thoughts, feelings, beliefs) that cause us to be 'stuck' in a particular behavior pattern.  As we identify and process these experiences, the intensity of the emotion will decrease dramatically.  You won't lose the memory or fabricate something that is not there; rather you will find relief from the pain that it may be causing.  It is very important to find a therapist who is trained and skilled in providing this service.

                                                  Trauma ~
This can be defined as 'an extremely distressing experience that causes severe emotional shock and may have long lasting psychological effects'.  It can be an isolated incident, like an auto accident or it can be chronic, like childhood abuse or domestic violence.  Symptoms that result from trauma may include ~
  • distressing dreams
  • flashbacks
  • feeling detached from loved ones
  • reduced ability to feel emotions
  • irritability
  • difficulty in completing tasks
These are all very normal yet incredibly disruptive reactions to a 'distressing experience'.  It is important to know that there are very effective, research-based methods of treating these symptoms.  You can read more about trauma by visiting http://www.helpguide.org/mental/emotional_psychological_trauma.htm.  You can also call me for a free phone consultation.  My direct line is 303-867-4619.
